In Leonardo's notes for 'The Deluge' - all it's various elements, even those that are purely plastic (the visual element), and the noise of crashing and crying (the sound element) - ALL equally fuse into a single, unifying definitive image of a deluge.

Kepping this in mind, we see that the transition from silent montage to sound-picture, or audio-video montage really changes nothing in principle.

 

Montage = a large, developing thematic movement progressing through a continuing diagram of individual splices.
