From the beginnings of music in prehistory, we have experienced patterns which the ear perceives as harmony (linear and simultaneous) of music.  In that same way, these graphic motion harmonics are perceived visually.  Harmonic considerations dominate the composer's choice of notes that sound at any exact time.
